Where in the World is AANA? – Cairo, Egypt Edition

AANA Members Pietro M. Tonino, M.D. and Robert E. Hunter, M.D. traveled to Cairo, Egypt for the Egyptian Arthroscopy Association’s 8th International Congress Feb. 25-27, with AANA serving as the Congress’s Guest Nation. This year’s scientific program featured dedicated sessions on knee arthritis and workshops on reverse-shoulder arthroplasty.

We had the pleasure of asking Drs. Tonino and Hunter a few questions about the Congress and what they are hoping to learn from their international colleagues.

What types of educational sessions/models will EGAA 2020 feature?

Robert E. Hunter, M.D. (RH) and Pietro M. Tonino, M.D. (PT): The conference is divided into didactic lecture, case presentations and workshops (Instructional Course Lectures).

What scientific sessions are you most looking forward to at the meeting?

RH and PT: There are a couple very good ACL sessions with speakers from around the globe. It is always interesting to hear and see the different philosophies based on geography.

Will each day focus on a certain topic?

RH and PT: The conference is arranged by topic and focuses primarily on knee and shoulder.

Are there any tips or pearls you hope to learn from your international colleagues?

RH: I am always interested in hearing approaches, strategies and techniques from surgeons practicing in other countries and continents.

PT: I really admire the vast experience our Egyptian colleagues have with both ACL surgery and with dramatic knee injuries for motorbike-type accidents that we don’t normally see back home in the United States.

Why would you say it’s important for AANA Members to participate in international congresses?

RH: AANA is the recognized leader in arthroscopy worldwide. Regions have strong societies but only AANA reaches across the globe. I feel it is critical for AANA to promote its brand and its surgeons while at the same time, growing and learning from the ideas and expertise of surgeons from other regions.

PT: I think it is important for AANA Members to participate in these kind of meetings because not only are we teaching standard of care, up-to-date arthroscopic surgical techniques and careful patient selection for surgery, but we are also learning from our international colleagues and this may help us provide better care for our patients.
